Bound children were indentured servants whose master provided training in a craft, board, lodging, and clothes for seven years or until the child came of age.
American colonists continued to use British monetary units, namely the pound, shilling and pence for which £1 (orli) equalled 20s and 1s equalled 12d. In 1792 the dollar was established as the basic unit of currency.
Gabriel Fox was born in 1736 in Kingwood, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He was the son of George and Mary Fox. He was a tanner.
Gabriel and Anne's children were:
Ivea Fox Allen (1758, married David Allen) and William Fox (June 8, 1759, married Sarah Hutton and Jemima Vause).
Ann died in 1762.
He was granted 48 acres in Loudoun County in 1769, Virginia on the drains of Broad Run. He was to pay an annual rent of one shilling on the feast day of St. Michaels. He appeared in the census lists of Loudoun County for 1769, 1771, and 1772.
In 1778, he and his son, William, witnessed an indenture between the Foxes and Jonas Clapman. Jonas paid them 800£ for 500 acres in Loudoun County.
The family later moved to Romney, Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia). Gabriel appeared in the census lists of Hampshire County in 1782.
He wrote his will on February 26, 1798 and it was proved on December 15, 1799. His son, William, received his carpenter tools. It named his grandsons William and John Allen and granddaughters Margaret Allen and Ivea Fox. The will directed his wife to care for and educate Malen Lewis who was probably an apprentice or indentured servant. The witnesses were Edward Ryan, James Clark, Richard Jenking and David Allen. A tanner treats animal skins to produce leather. After the tanning process, the currier dresses, finishes and colors the tanned hide.
Hunterdon County was originally part of Burlington County, West Jersey. It was set off from Burlington County on March 11, 1714. It included Amwell, Hopewell, and Maidenhead Townships.
Kingwood Township is on the western border of Hunterdon County, New Jersey. It was founded in 1798.
Loudoun County is part of Northern Neck of Virginia.
Settling of the Loudoun area began between 1725 and 1730. Settlers came from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland.

Seals were used to authenticate documents and men were expected to have a personal die. Records in deed books are copies and signatures are usually in the clerk’s handwriting. The clerk drew a circle around the word “seal” to indicate that the original document was sealed.

Provided that if the said Gabriel Fox his Heirs and Assigns shall not pay the said reserved annual Rent as aforesaid so that the same or any Part thereof shall be behind and unpaid by the Space of two whole Years after the same shall become due If legally demanded that then it shall and may be lawful for me my Heirs or Assigns Proprietors as aforesaid my or their Certain Attorney or Attornies Agent or Agents into the above granted Premises to reenter and hold the same so as if this Grant had never passed
